Halfway to Mexico

Yesterday we went literally halfway to Mexico to get tacos. But I guess that's really not all that impressive considering the international border is less than half an hour down the freeway. Still, they were really good tacos. I was thinking I'd like the cabeza best, but I think the adobada came out on top.

We were down in those parts to check out the new Borders concept store in National City. I'd heard other people's reports about these stores, and they were mostly mixed to negative: all media and flash and fewer books than other Borders. That's not really what I found, though. Compared to regular Borders stores, the DVDs and sideline items were more prominently placed, the ZOMG IT'S NEW BOOKS BUY THEM BUY THEM NOW sections in front presented a bit more of a physical barrier to the rest of the store, and there were some gimmicky computer kiosk and video displays in places like the travel and gardening sections, but when it came to actual books, I found the selection on par with other Borders. Maybe even a little better in SF and YA.

Shrug?

Yesterday's writing space, Caffe Forte in North Park, came with a guardian rocking tiger. Insufficient table seating and outlets, though, so I doubt it'll go into the regular rotation. I think today's gonna be a quiet day at home. I'll set up to my little table, try to avoid fiddling too much with my website and focus instead of wordage, and it'll be just fine.

I always admire someone who can write in a 'noisy' environment. It's terrible, but I've come to need silence and solitude to get anything substantial done. :( Well, I should clarify that I've ALWAYS been this way. But I like the idea of an outdoor coffee or wine bar on the street in NYC, writing away.

Just not me.

It's actually been a bit of a struggle for me to get used to writing at home. I like the stimulation of being out in public when I work. But I still need headphones to block out the noise.
