Cartoons

A grad student studying birds caught a picture of a wolverine in Tahoe National Forest with a remotely operated camera. It's the first confirmed sighting of a wolverine in California since the 1920's, and it occurred 900 miles from the nearest known wolverine population. The experts don't know where it came from, but, hey, neat! You can read the full story here (via Paul Dini's LJ).

Cartoons, cartoons, cartoons. I haven't even been reading fiction, just watching cartoons. I highly recommend Hellboy: Blood and Iron. Really good writing, and though it doesn't quite capture Mike Mignola's distinct inkline, the character design gets it right.

Also watched the first episode of X-Men: Evolution, which was meh, but maybe I'll give it a few more episodes. And in about fifteen minutes I'll be watching the series finale of The Batman.

Afterwards, I should, like, get some work done.

I'll leave you with a Bruce Timm drawing of Storm. A Bruce Timm X-Men could be really cool.

soft eyes, iron thighs

I could be mistaken, but I think The Mighty Hercules ran in syndication on KHJ Los Angeles, Channel 9. And if you grew up in LA, I know what you're thinking: Channel 9? Nothing good ever came on Channel 9. Channel 9 was, like, Bowling for Dollars.

But that's neither here nor there.

The Mighty Hercules theme song is awfully catchy. In fact, the melody runs through my head with alarming frequency, because the tune is just awesome. But of the lyrics, all I've ever been able to remember is the part about Herc having the strength of ten ordinary men.

Turns out they're quite evocative. To wit:

Softness in his eyes
Iron in his thighs
Virtue in his heart
Fire in every part
of the mighty Hercules!

Justice League madness

I am watching Justice League: The New Frontier, and it is so awesome and I am so excited that I am about to explode.

So far I've watched the title sequence.

If you aren't watching Justice League: The New Frontier at this moment, then maybe you should at least drop my by current favorite blog, Rob Kelly's JLA Satellite. Or, almost as delightful, the Aquaman Shrine, from which I nabbed the choice treat below.

And let Bruce Timm do Watchmen

Last night I watched the final episode of Justice League Unlimited.

a bit of spoiler )
And I swear, once the Big Three ran or flew out-of-frame for the last time, I almost teared up.

And it wasn't even all that emotional a scene! I'm just that huge of a geek about this stuff!

This show was just the coolest rendition of the Justice League ever, and I'm so sad it's over.

Next up, I'm going to watch the first season of Justice League (the show that preceded Justice League Unlimited). Then I'll probably need to get the second season. Then, I might need to get the entire run of the animated Superman.

I wonder if they'll ever do a Green Lantern/Green Arrow show. With frequent guest spots by the Question (as long as he's voiced by Jeffrey Coombs). And also the Flash (Michael Rosenbaum).

Probably not. That's a shame.

Passed my first test at the new Kung Fu school. Sometimes it really doesn't feel like I've been doing this as long as I have, because I'm still really quite lame, even on the white belt material. Staff form felt pretty good, at least. And I got good marks on Respect and Attitude. I'm also punctual and maintain good hygiene.

My kicks, though? If you ever get in a fight with me, try to goad me into a fan kick. It'll be like being attacked by an arthritic stork.

I want to do nothing but watch superhero cartoons all day. But that would be irresponsible.

I am bothered by the intrusion of 3-D animated elements, such as spaceships and cars and disco balls (seriously), into otherwise 2-D animated productions.

Otherwise, I'm getting the same buzz from Justice League Unlimited that I used to get from comic books before they started with the incessant retconning. But I guess that should be no surprise, given that my introduction to superheroes wasn't through comic books as much as it was through syndicated repeats of the Filmation Aquaman, Superman, Batman, Atom, Flash, Hawkman, Teen Titans, and Green Lantern cartoons (and, omg, the Ted Knight narration!). And of course the Ralph Bakshi Spider-Man. Of course.

And the stuff that hooked me is actually pretty crappy compared to JLU. Today's kids, they got it lucky.

Anyway, I'll stop blathering about it for now, because this journal is threatening to become a 70's nostalgia blog, and I do have a life outside Micronauts and Planet of the Apes and the Legion of Doom.

Shut up, I do!
